"Highly intuitive about how the water of the paper (saturation) and color work together to create." -ArtCenter Manatee Student

“I have tried to paint with watercolors since high school, even after a semester of watercolor painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art, I have found it frustrating. Painting with Dylan was a revelation. My skills took a leap and bound during the 2 day workshop. “

-Quinlan Visual Center for the Arts Student

"Dylan is brilliant! He has a delightful and generous spirit - I thoroughly enjoyed his class. I would love to sign up for another." -ArtCenter Manatee Student

Color Choices: using color effectively to tell and story and message in your art

February 21st - 22nd, 2020

Friday and Saturday

Cherokee Arts Center

This workshop is about how using a limited palette and color scheme for each of your paintings can make a major difference in telling the story you wish to convey in each painting. Dylan will do many demonstrations to show his process of making color choices and revealing a mood and message in the painting. Students will be able to also work to their own color studies with Dylan's guidance and from photo references which will be provided. You are welcome to bring an image of your own that you may like some guidance with.  This class is a fun and quick paced class where we paint lots and lots of little loose studies. Dylan will be using watercolor but students can use any medium for color studies.

Understanding color theory, how to capture the essence using color.

Two days of painting loose 5x7 watercolor studies with big brushes exploring how to use various color schemes to evoke the mood and message. We will also go over the process how to choose a color scheme and why.

We will explore different ways of neutralizing colors and why. And look at relationships between colors.

We’ll do studies for each image to see comparisons of how different color scheme effects and changes the mood and message.

We will also take a look at the Triadic color palette, what colors work together and how to use it effectively.
Triadic is a limited palette of three colors evenly spaced on the color wheel and makes beautiful harmonies.

I have loved using the Triadic while in the studio and plein air painting landscapes. For more about Triadic check out the Triadic Blog.

There will be lots of demos and one on one help.

I hope you can join, I am looking forward to it!
